BVES status conference: Current developments in norms and standardization for energy storage systems
The online status conference on standards and standardization took place on 3 September, where the BVES was pleased to welcome 300 participants. The aim of the conference was to provide a comprehensive overview of current developments in the field of standardization.

The norms and standards in the field of energy storage are in a state of constant evolution. Key regulatory principles for battery storage systems are currently being created at EU level and will soon be firmly established. These include the EU Battery Regulation (EU-BattVO), which covers the entire life cycle of batteries and used batteries. However, there is still uncertainty in many areas, as some standards are still being developed, while legal requirements already exist. The BVES therefore considers it essential to regularly inform its members about new developments and their effects and to promote exchange. After a welcome address by Urban Windelen, Managing Director of BVES, Thomas Timke from Solarwatt and Franz Streibl of Runder Tisch Reparatur e.V. presented the current status in the standardization committees. Mathieu Diemert from Hager Electro GmbH Co. KG gave an update on the VDE/FNN note on the storage connection in low voltage. Dr. Jan Regtmeier from Denios SE and Daniel Wasser from secAdair GmbH reported on the progress of the BVES safety guidelines for large battery storage systems. A particular focus was placed on the aspects of the EU Battery Regulation and the challenges of its implementation, including:
- Stationary storage
- 2nd-Life Use
- Legal challenges
- Statement procedure and carbon footprint
- Performance and durability requirements
BVES is committed to the further development and harmonization of norms and standards as a stable basis for the storage industry. It is actively participating in national organizations such as DIN, DKE and FNN as well as internationally in CENELEC and IEC. Experts from the industry and member organizations define quality criteria, create industry guidelines and develop technical standards for safe and efficient storage solutions.
