Energy storage for charging infrastructure now eligible for non-discriminatory funding
The new funding program of the Federal Ministry for Digitalization and Transportation places its focus on the performance at the charging connector and, for the first time, supports energy storage as a service provider without discrimination

Energy storage systems are now finally eligible for funding as providers of demand-based charging power without discrimination! Previously, the funding was primarily directed toward grid expansion and grid connection.
On September 18, the new funding guideline for commercial charging infrastructure was released by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport and NOW GmbH. We at BVES are very pleased about the inclusion of storage facilities.
Energy storage systems can serve as buffer storage to guarantee (ultra)fast charging and ensure simultaneous charging of numerous vehicles without first having to wait for the often time-consuming expansion of the grid and the upgrade of the grid connection. Particularly in trade and industry, time and operational capability are crucial for economic operation.
These systems can also integrate the company’s own renewable energy generation and make it available precisely when charging power is in demand, and not only when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing. The electrification of delivery and logistics operations can make a decisive contribution to emissions reduction. However, this is achieved only with a suitable charging infrastructure — and this infrastructure can be implemented quickly, reliably and easily with buffer storage systems.
After constructive dialogues and open exchanges with the relevant authorities, we have now achieved funding that aligns with the state of technology. We thank Johannes Pallasch and his team at the National Control Center for Charging Infrastructure for this important step.
In this way, it will also be possible to bring about a change in mobility in commerce and industry and to rapidly expand the charging infrastructure needed. Many BVES members are willing to provide suitable charging solutions with storage.
